Collection 100..Rational

Product & Promotion/Product & Packaging/ Product & Distribution. Why?
Product and Promotion.

Who is the audience and how do you intend to engage with them?
My main audience is Star Wars fans of all generations, as all six films have spanned over a 30 year period and appeal to so many different people.

What is the function of the product?- it is supposed to inform/ educate/ document/ entertain/ instruct? What has informed this decision?
The direction of my research has lead me to the merchandise and toy aspect of Star Wars, in particular the vehicles in the films and the expanded universe that the characters come to use and encounter. I would hope to categorise these in an affective way that will inform and entertain fans, showing the different types of vehicles that are out there.

How will the audience interact with the product?
I would like to keep my product as interactive as possible, maybe producing a short animation or print that Star Wars fans can relate to.

What If... Self Evaluation

What problem did you identify?
The problem that our group had to identify was men get bored while shopping with there female partners or friends.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?
95% of men we found that were shopping when with a female partner/friend said they were bored.

What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?
We gathered primary research in a variety of ways, we went out into the various shops and recorded customers which gave us quantitative data. We also gathered secondary research from various sources on the Internet, which were used to compare to the data that we collected.

What methods of research did you find useful and why?
The most useful research was the primary research, as it gave the group an insight into what actually men felt when out shopping. Compared to the secondary research that we gathered, we were able to get a clearer opinion of what people thought.

How did these inform your response to your problem?
The better feedback from the research was from the primary research as it allowed us to narrow down what men shopping with there female partners/friends wanted. The main consensus from the information is that the men wanted to be entertained while shopping/ waiting, so we set about trying to come up with some solutions to solve this problem.

What methods did you encounter as problematic?
When were were out asking questions in the town centre men were less likely to stop and talk on there own or with a partner as they were to busy.

How did you overcome this?
We were able to overcome this by asking larger groups of guys both all male and mixed groups as they were often not constrained.

What research could you have carried but that would have proved more useful?
I think that we could have looked at what entertains men in more depths and what the best way to present our final solution to them would be.

List 5 things that you have learnt about the design process over the last 2 weeks
  • That the more specific you are with your problem the easier it is to generate concepts to solve the problem
  • That organisation and communication is key to functioning well as a group
  • Being able to make quick and efficient decisions is harder in a group due to various ideas that members have in the group
  • It is important to keep an open mind when developing ideas, working with each other to get the best outcome possible
  • A good depth of research is key to help generate ideas and develop them towards the final solution
List 5 things you would do differently next time
  • Explore and develop our ideas throughout the whole design process of the project
  • Explore different media to visually communicate our final solution
  • Gather more specific research relevant to the problem and the target audience
  • Be more decisive as a group
  • Document the progress of the group and myself more effectively
